There is a new minimum wage finally approved for Nigerian workers by the National Council of State at a meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
It will surely be a good news for workers whose minimum wage has now been officially approved and shifted from 18,000 Naira to 27,000 Naira.
The Minister of Labour Chris Ngige briefed State House correspondents at the end of the Council of State meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, the bill approved by the Council includes N30000 minimum wage for Fed. workers and N27,000 for states and private sector.
The proposal, he said, will cover employers of labour with minimum of 25 workers.
He explained that the Federal Executive Council and the National Economic Council meetings have already considered the bill.
The bill, he said, will be transmitted to the National Assembly before the close of business on Wednesday.
As the National Assembly is on recess, he said that the concerned committees in the National Assembly will continue work on the bill.
Recall Labour unions had pushed for 30,000 Naira, but the National Council of State said on Tuesday that it approved 27,000 Naira as the new National Minimum Wage.
It is not clear whether the organised labour would accept the new minimum wage approved by the the National Council of State, as they had earlier said: “On 30,000 Naira we stand”.
The unions had, however, during negotiations, in what appeared like they shot themselves in the foot, accepted that the new minimum wage would be anything between 24,000 Naira and 30,000 Naira.

The National Council of State meeting held at the State House in Abuja was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari and others at the meeting were former Presidents/Heads of State Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Shonekan, Abdulsalam Abubakar and Goodluck Jonathan.
