Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has confirmed a massive explosion which occurred around Akure-Owo expressway near the Airport, destroying many residential houses, a school, and church building.
He said a vehicle moving improvised explosive devices to a nearby state caused the explosion that rocked Akure, the state capital.
The PUNCH reports that the explosion which occurred in the early hours of Saturday split the Akure Owo Road into two, destroying over 50 buildings.
Akeredolu, who inspected the scene of the explosion on Saturday, said he was briefed by security chiefs.
He explained that the vehicle was in a convoy heading to a storage facility in a neighbouring state when it broke down along the Akure Owo Road, some 2km to the Akure Airport.
The blast destroyed Possibility Church, a popular church located less than a kilometer to Akure Airport, and Aina Awawu International College.
The explosion, suspected to be a bomb blast cut off the busy Akure/Owo road.
Although no life is so far reportedly lost.
The incident, which happened less than a kilometre to Akure Airport, affected many residents of Eleyowo community, destroying the church and the school in the area.
Many people, who lived within the the church premises, were said to have been wounded.
The site at which the explosion happened has a deep crater cutting off the road and hindering vehicular movement.
Many houses around that Ilu Abo area were affected.
