Lagos Government Closes Access Bank Branch Over Environmental Violations

Authorities in Lagos have shut down yet another branch of Access Bank over environmental violations tied to improper waste disposal.

Lagos Government Closes Access Bank Branch Over Environmental Violations

The development was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who revealed that the action followed a tip-off from a concerned whistleblower.

Acting on the report, officials from the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office carried out a joint enforcement operation at the bank’s branch on Land Bridge Avenue in Oniru, Victoria Island.

The Inspection

During the inspection, authorities discovered that the facility had been channeling untreated faecal waste directly into public drainage systems.

The illegal discharge was said to have caused offensive odors and contributed to environmental pollution in the area, in clear violation of existing state regulations.

Wahab noted that the government would not overlook such infractions, emphasising that the property would face penalties in line with environmental laws.

The closure is part of a broader campaign by the Lagos State Government to tackle sanitation issues and enforce compliance, particularly in busy commercial zones like Victoria Island, where environmental standards are under increasing scrutiny.
