A major political development has unfolded in Kano State as Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has stepped down from his role as Deputy Governor.

His resignation was confirmed on Friday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu, in a statement to newsmen.
The decision comes amid mounting pressure from the Kano State House of Assembly, which had recently moved to impeach him.
About three weeks ago, 38 lawmakers backed a motion to begin impeachment proceedings, citing allegations of serious misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
Impeachment Process
The impeachment process was formally initiated during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, following a presentation by Majority Leader Lawan Husseini Dala.
According to the Assembly, Gwarzo was accused of collecting illicit payments from the state’s 44 local government councils.
Lawmakers alleged that between June 2023 and January 2024, he received ₦1.5 million monthly from each council, totaling about ₦66 million per month and ₦462 million over seven months.
Further claims suggested that from February to July 2024, he continued to receive ₦3.255 million monthly from each council, reportedly under the pretext of carrying out special assignments. This was said to amount to an additional ₦726 million within that six-month period.
Gwarzo’s challenges were also linked to internal political divisions.

His refusal to follow Abba Yusuf, the Kano State Governor, in a proposed defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is believed to have further strained relationships within the state’s political structure.
