‘I Don’t Own the Character’ – Papa Ajasco Star Abiodun Ayoyinka Opens Up

Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known to millions of viewers as Papa Ajasco, has opened up about the personal and professional struggles he has faced despite the fame that came with playing one of Nigeria’s most recognizable comedy characters.

‘I Don’t Own the Character’ – Papa Ajasco Star Abiodun Ayoyinka Opens Up

Ayoyinka rose to prominence through the long-running television comedy Papa Ajasco & Company, produced by Wale Adenuga under Wale Adenuga Productions.

For many years, he became the face of the humorous, bald-headed character whose exaggerated reactions and witty moments made the show a household favourite across Nigeria.

However, during a recent conversation with media personality Lucky Udu, the actor revealed that the ownership of the famous character has significantly limited the opportunities available to him outside the television series.

According to Ayoyinka, the Papa Ajasco character — including the name and distinctive costume — is officially registered by the production company.

Because of this, he does not have the legal freedom to use the identity independently in advertisements, brand endorsements, or other commercial projects.

Right To Name

He explained that many companies approach him specifically because they want the iconic character in their campaigns. Unfortunately, he cannot accept such offers unless he obtains formal permission from the rights holders.

“The major challenge is that the character itself has been registered,” he said. “Whenever people want to work with me outside the show, they expect to see the full character — the name, the costume, everything that makes Papa Ajasco. But I don’t have the authority to use it freely.”

The actor added that even wearing the costume or appearing publicly as the character without approval could create legal issues, which has made it difficult to take advantage of opportunities tied to the persona that made him famous.

Beyond the restrictions around the character, Ayoyinka also spoke candidly about the financial difficulties he has faced in recent years. Before retiring, he worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, but he stepped away from the role about five years ago.

Since then, he said life has been challenging.

Reflecting on his current situation, the veteran actor admitted that the realities of life after retirement have not been easy.

The Struggle

Despite decades in entertainment and his popularity among fans, he revealed that he still struggles with basic financial stability.

Ayoyinka said he spends much of his time worrying about how to improve his circumstances.

“Things have not really been okay for a long time,” he said. “I retired five years ago, and since then it hasn’t been easy trying to connect with people or move forward.”

He also shared that he currently does not own a house or a personal car — a revelation that has surprised many fans who grew up watching him as one of Nigeria’s most beloved comic characters.
