The Federal Government has opened applications for the 2026 edition of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, offering Nigerian students an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies abroad.

The scholarship, as reported, is available to qualified MSc and PhD candidates seeking advanced training in oil and gas–related disciplines. Successful applicants will study in select institutions across the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Malaysia.
According to details published on the PTDF portal, the award is fully funded and covers tuition fees, return flight tickets, accommodation, monthly living stipends, health insurance and bench fees where required.
The programme is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s technical capacity by exposing scholars to global best practices and cutting-edge research facilities in the energy sector.
For doctoral candidates heading to the United Kingdom, PTDF explained that the programme will run under a split-site model.
Scholars will conduct part of their research at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna (CPESK) and the remainder at partner universities in the UK, including Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Portsmouth.
The Fund emphasized that the scholarship is highly competitive, noting that selection will be strictly merit-based.
Assessment will focus on applicants’ academic performance, quality of research proposals, professional affiliations and the relevance of their proposed studies to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
To be eligible for the MSc category, candidates must hold at least a Second Class Lower (2.2) or Upper (2.1) degree, have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, be computer literate and possess a minimum of five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
PhD applicants are additionally required to submit a research proposal of no more than five pages outlining their research objectives, methodology and data collection strategy.
PTDF also cautioned applicants to ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified before applying, stressing that multiple applications or submission of false documents will lead to immediate disqualification.
