The mother to a black jogger who was shot and killed by two white men in Georgia is calling for an arrests two months later
There have been no arrests made nearly two months after a black man was shot while out for a run in Georgia – a deadly incident the victim’s mother described as an “act of racial violence.”
Ahmaud Arbery was jogging in Brunswick, a coastal city located in between Jacksonville and Savannah, on Feb. 23 when he was shot and killed by a pair of white men who said they believed he was a burglar.
They were identified as 64-year-old neighborhood resident Gregory McMichael and his 34-year-old son, Travis.
Neither of them have been charged in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
“Ahmaud is no longer with us and he’s not with us because two men followed him while he was jogging and killed him,” the victim’s mother, Wanda Jones told CBS News on Friday.
“An arrest should have been made already.”
Neighbors at the time said there had been break-ins in the area and Arbery was allegedly spotted at a home that was under construction before taking off on his run. It was enough to prompt a series of 911 calls from troubled residents.
According to a police report obtained by the news station, the older McMichael claimed he recognized the 25-year-old from the break-ins as he ran by. Gregory told investigators Arbery “violently” attacked his son and the pair “fought over the shotgun” before Travis pulled the trigger, twice.
The case has since been referred to District Attorney Thomas Durden, based in Hinesville 70 miles away, due to a potential conflict of interest.
