Residents of Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State were gripped by fear on Sunday evening after gunmen suspected to be attackers invaded the Gari Ya Waye community, leaving multiple casualties in their wake.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7:50 p.m., when the assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the area and began shooting indiscriminately.
The sudden eruption of gunfire sent panic through the community, forcing residents to flee for safety in different directions.
Eyewitness accounts described a chaotic scene, with many people running for their lives while others hid indoors as the attackers carried out the assault.
Although the exact number of victims has not yet been officially confirmed, local sources indicated that several people lost their lives, while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The Swift Operation
The gunmen were said to have operated swiftly, firing sporadically before escaping under the cover of darkness.
In the aftermath, injured residents were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Security forces, including personnel from the Nigerian Army and other agencies, responded shortly after receiving distress calls.
Their presence helped restore a measure of calm as efforts were made to secure the area and provide assistance to victims.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to track down those responsible for the attack.
As of Sunday night, no group had claimed responsibility, and the motive behind the violence remains unknown.
