The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has unveiled a new fare structure for public buses across Lagos following the approval of a 13 per cent increase by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The adjustment applies to all services operating under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), covering both Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors and standard bus routes statewide.
Why the Fares Were Reviewed
The state government approved the increment after transport operators raised concerns about mounting operational costs.
According to them, the combined impact of inflation, rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance expenses, and other economic pressures has made it increasingly difficult to sustain smooth and efficient operations.
In a statement, LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, explained that the review aligns with the government’s existing annual fare adjustment framework.
He noted that Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at 15.2 per cent at the end of 2025, based on figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, further justifying the need for the revision.
Government’s Position
While acknowledging the financial strain on operators, the Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to keeping public transport affordable for residents.
Officials assured commuters that efforts are ongoing to strike a balance between cost recovery for operators and the delivery of safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services.
Effective Date
The revised fares will take effect from March 2, 2026, across all BRI routes.
