Ahmadu Fintiri, the Governor of Adamawa State, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a strategic step aimed at accelerating development in the state.

The governor announced his defection in a statewide broadcast on Friday, revealing that the decision was reached after consultations with political allies and stakeholders.

According to him, several members of his cabinet and key PDP figures in Adamawa aligned with his new political direction and have also crossed over to the APC.

Fintiri maintained that the switch was driven by what he termed the overriding need to secure greater opportunities and progress for Adamawa, rather than personal political considerations. He stressed that unity of purpose and access to broader national support structures would better position the state for growth.

The governor’s defection follows a wave of resignations within the Adamawa State House of Assembly earlier in the week.

During Wednesday’s plenary, Speaker Bathiya Wesley formally announced his exit from the PDP, alongside numerous colleagues.

Among those who resigned were Deputy Speaker Mohammed Buba Jijiwa and more than a dozen other lawmakers.

In total, about fifteen assembly members severed ties with the PDP, citing unresolved issues and internal challenges at the party’s national level as major factors behind their decisions.

While most of the departing lawmakers are widely expected to join the APC, a handful are said to still be weighing their next political move.
