FG to End Use of Chalkboards in Schools by 2027

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to phase out the use of chalkboards in schools nationwide by 2027, as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the country’s education system.

According to the Ministry of Education, the initiative aims to introduce digital teaching tools, such as smartboards and interactive learning devices, across public and private schools to improve teaching standards and learning outcomes.

Officials say the move is part of the broader Education Digital Transformation Agenda (EDTA), which seeks to integrate technology into classrooms, enhance teacher training, and bridge the learning gap between rural and urban areas.

“The days of dusty chalkboards are coming to an end,” an education ministry spokesperson said. “By 2027, every classroom in Nigeria should have transitioned to digital learning tools that prepare students for a tech-driven future.”

The government also revealed plans to partner with local tech firms and international donors to ensure affordability and accessibility of the new teaching equipment.

Education experts have hailed the move as a step toward modernizing Nigeria’s education system, though they stress the need for adequate funding, teacher retraining, and stable electricity supply to make the transition effective.
