The development comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the former governor.

Reports indicate that security operatives attempted to detain him on Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport shortly after his return from Cairo, Egypt.

The effort was unsuccessful and has since drawn criticism from some of his allies.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai alleged that the move against him may be politically motivated.

He claimed that his open criticism of the administration of President Bola Tinubu could be behind attempts to arrest him.
