El-Rufai Raises Alarm Over Alleged Arrest Plan, Says Opposition Figures Under Pressure

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC) could be preparing to arrest him as political tensions continue to mount across the country.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, the former governor—now aligned with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC)—claimed that several political figures are being pressured to either defect to the ruling party or remain loyal to it.

His comments come amid growing friction between him and the APC, the party under which he served two terms as governor.

Although El-Rufai said he has not been taken into custody, he disclosed that some of his former associates in Kaduna have already been detained.

According to him, four individuals who worked closely with him during his time in office have been arrested, suggesting that he may be next.

The Face-off

His remarks highlight an escalating political standoff, particularly as he has recently stepped up criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Since distancing himself from the APC, El-Rufai has emerged as a vocal opposition figure.

He further alleged that efforts are underway to weaken opposition forces ahead of future elections, claiming that political actors are being coerced into aligning with the ruling party.

The unfolding situation coincides with the arrest and prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Malami with offences including abuse of office and money laundering.
He was subsequently rearrested over additional allegations linked to terrorism financing.

Malami, who recently defected from the APC to the ADC and is seen as a critic of the current administration, has denied all allegations. He maintains that the charges against him are politically motivated and part of a broader campaign to silence opposition voices.
