The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected allegations of a religious genocide taking place in West Africa, describing such claims as unfounded and dangerous misinformation capable of destabilizing the region.

In a statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja, ECOWAS emphasized that no member state is engaged in systemic religious persecution, adding that the bloc remains committed to promoting religious tolerance, democracy, and regional stability.
“The ECOWAS Commission wishes to categorically state that there is no ongoing religious genocide in any part of West Africa. Member states continue to uphold freedom of religion and belief as enshrined in their constitutions and the ECOWAS Protocols on Democracy and Good Governance,”

The regional body also urged international actors and media organizations to verify sensitive security and religious claims before publication, warning that false narratives could incite division, fear, and external interference.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its support for ongoing peacekeeping, interfaith, and humanitarian efforts across the region, calling for unity among citizens regardless of religious or ethnic background.
