Dangote Refinery to Halt Petrol Sales in Naira from September 28

In a move that could send shockwaves through Nigeria’s energy market, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced it will stop selling petrol in Naira effective tomorrow, September 28, 2025.

According to the refinery, its crude oil allocations priced in Naira have been completely exhausted, leaving the company unable to continue local-currency transactions for petrol.

The announcement raises fresh concerns about the impact on fuel prices, forex demand, and access to petrol across Nigeria. Analysts warn that the decision may further strain the country’s fragile economy, which is already grappling with inflation and rising cost of living.

The Dangote Refinery, celebrated as Africa’s largest and a key hope for reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products, is now facing tough questions about sustainability, supply agreements, and the government’s role in ensuring affordability for Nigerians.

The federal government has yet to issue an official response to the development.
