Court Retains EFCC Bail for Former Labour Minister Chris Ngige

A court has upheld the bail conditions granted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, insisting that he must provide a top-ranking civil servant as one of his sureties.

The ruling followed Ngige’s arraignment over alleged corruption-related charges filed by the EFCC. The court declined to vary the bail terms, stressing that the conditions remain appropriate given the nature of the case and the status of the defendant.

According to the court, the surety must be a senior civil servant of high standing, capable of guaranteeing Ngige’s continued availability for trial. Other bail conditions earlier imposed by the anti-graft agency were also maintained.

Ngige, a former governor of Anambra State, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is expected to meet the bail requirements before being released pending the continuation of the trial.

The case has been adjourned to a later date for further proceedings as the EFCC continues its prosecution.
