Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has shared an interesting behind-the-scenes moment involving Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

CAF President Reveals Why Burna Boy Was Delayed at Moroccan Airport During AFCON

Speaking at a press briefing, Motsepe revealed that the Grammy-winning artist encountered a brief setback upon arrival in the country while en route to headline an AFCON-related event.

According to him, Moroccan customs officials temporarily delayed Burna Boy after raising questions about the large quantity of luxury jewellery he was carrying.

Motsepe explained that the issue was quickly settled once he stepped in personally. “I was informed that Burna Boy had been stopped at the airport because of his heavy and impressive gold jewellery,” the CAF president said. “I intervened, and the situation was resolved without any further problems.”

The short delay did not dampen the singer’s schedule, as Burna Boy later delivered an electrifying performance at the TotalEnergies AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat on January 16. The show drew massive crowds and also featured Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy, alongside popular Moroccan acts Stormy and Jaylann.

Meanwhile, on the football front, Nigeria celebrated a dramatic finish to their AFCON campaign as Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero in the third-place playoff against Egypt on Saturday, January 17.

After a tense goalless encounter that stretched beyond 95 minutes and was marked by several missed chances and VAR interruptions, the match was decided by penalties. Nwabali rose to the occasion, pulling off two crucial saves during the shootout to secure a bronze medal for Nigeria.
