TikTok content creators across Nigeria have voiced mixed reactions following the Federal Government’s proposal to introduce new regulations aimed at monitoring and moderating social media activities on the platform.

The proposed guidelines, which are still under review, seek to ensure responsible content creation, curb misinformation, and promote national values on social media platforms — including TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
While some creators welcomed the move, saying it could help address online harassment and fake news, others expressed concern that the regulations might stifle creativity and freedom of expression.
A popular content creator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “If these new rules are about censorship, it will affect our work and limit how we express ourselves. We just hope the government listens to our voices.”
Officials from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation have assured that the process will involve stakeholder consultations before implementation.
