Nigeria’s military has confirmed that a series of suicide bombings that rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening were carried out by Boko Haram insurgents.
In an official statement, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, disclosed that multiple attackers detonated improvised explosive devices at three busy locations across the city.
The blasts occurred around 7:05 p.m., coinciding with Iftar—the time Muslims break their fast during Ramadan.
According to Uba, the targeted areas included the Post Office vicinity, the Monday Market axis, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
He described the coordinated attacks as deliberate attempts to inflict heavy casualties and spread fear among residents.
Security forces, including troops of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, were said to have responded quickly.
The affected areas were immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further danger.
Emergency responders, alongside personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and medical teams, evacuated victims to nearby health facilities such as the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and UMTH for urgent treatment.
Intelligence Reports
Uba assured the public that medical personnel are actively attending to the injured, while rescue and evacuation operations continue.
He also revealed that intelligence reports suggest the possibility of additional planned attacks, with indications that more suicide bombers may have been deployed within the city.
As a result, security agencies have heightened surveillance, increased patrols, and intensified counter-IED operations to neutralize any remaining threats.
Residents were urged to stay alert, minimize visits to crowded places, and report any suspicious individuals or objects to security authorities without delay.

The military extended condolences to the families of those affected and reaffirmed its commitment, alongside other security agencies, to protect lives and bring those responsible for the attacks to justice.
