Benue Survivor Tells U.S. Congress

A survivor of the June 2025 Yelwata massacre in Benue State, Msurshima Apeh, gave a heartbreaking testimony before the United States Congress yesterday, recounting the brutal moments she witnessed the killing of her five children during the deadly attack.

Speaking through tears, Apeh described how armed assailants stormed her community, burning homes and shooting indiscriminately. She recalled hiding with her children, only to watch helplessly as they were killed one after the other.

Her testimony forms part of a growing body of evidence presented to U.S. lawmakers investigating rising violence and alleged targeted attacks on vulnerable communities in Nigeria.

Apeh pleaded with the international community to intervene, saying no mother should ever endure the pain she carries.

Her emotional account drew strong reactions from members of Congress, who expressed concern over the escalating insecurity in parts of Nigeria.
