Baba-Ahmed: ADC Lacks Political Heavyweights Like Buhari and Tinubu

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed reservations about the unity and electoral viability of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, arguing that the party lacks influential political figures capable of commanding broad national support.

Baba-Ahmed: ADC Lacks Political Heavyweights Like Buhari and Tinubu

In an interview with newsmen, Baba-Ahmed pointed out that the ADC has yet to produce leaders with the political stature and nationwide appeal of former President Muhammadu Buhari or President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, such figures play a critical role in consolidating party structures and mobilizing voters across diverse regions.

“They don’t have a Buhari or a Tinubu in the ADC. Tinubu has a lot of sense. They don’t have it in ADC,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed emphasised that experience, strategic thinking, and strong leadership are essential ingredients for electoral success, suggesting that the absence of these qualities at the highest level could weaken the coalition’s chances in future contests.

He also warned that internal friction may arise within the ADC depending on who eventually secures its presidential ticket. In his view, the emergence of prominent contenders could deepen divisions rather than foster unity.

“Because today, if Atiku wins the ticket, others have a problem with that. If Obi or Amaechi wins the ticket, other candidates will have a problem with it,” he stated, reiterating that the party lacks a unifying figure comparable to Buhari.

Despite his opposition stance, Baba-Ahmed acknowledged President Tinubu’s political skill, describing him as focused, strategic, and well-prepared.

He credited Tinubu’s determination and experience as key factors behind his political achievements.

Reflecting on past elections, Baba-Ahmed drew comparisons with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2011 re-election campaign.

He argued that Jonathan’s victory was influenced by a political understanding with northern stakeholders, including an implicit agreement that he would not seek another term in 2015.

“They don’t have a Jonathan in the game,” he said, explaining that Jonathan’s re-election was shaped by assurances that power would return to the North after his tenure.

According to Baba-Ahmed, these examples underscore deeper structural challenges within the ADC coalition. He maintained that without strong, widely respected leadership and careful political balancing, the party could struggle to maintain cohesion and build the nationwide momentum required to win future elections.
