Former Vice President and 2023 presidential flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the recent political move by his son, Abba Abubakar, who has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the decision as a private and independent choice.

Abba’s defection was formally announced on Thursday at the National Assembly, where he was welcomed into the APC by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside several party leaders from the North-East region.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Atiku clarified that he neither influenced nor opposed his son’s decision, stressing that democratic values allow individuals to freely choose their political path—even within the same family.
According to Atiku, political differences among relatives are not uncommon in a democracy, noting that he does not impose his personal beliefs on his children or any Nigerian citizen.
While acknowledging his son’s decision, the former vice president expressed deep dissatisfaction with the performance of the APC-led federal government. He said his primary concern remains what he described as widespread economic hardship, poor governance, and social challenges facing the country under the current administration.
Atiku reiterated his commitment to working with fellow patriots to provide Nigerians with a credible political alternative that prioritises good governance, national development, and economic relief.
