Aaron Hernandez a former NFL star has committed suicide in prison days after being acquitted of a 2012 double-murder.
“Life-saving techniques were attempted on Hernandez and he was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4.07am.”
The former New England Patriots tight end, 27, was previously found guilty of a double slaying after an argument over a spilled drink at a nightclub, but was still serving a separate life sentence for a 2013 murder.
But just last week, the jury found Hernandez not guilty of first-degree murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtafo in 2012, after six days of deliberations.
However, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell.
A statement from the Department of Correction read: “Mr Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population unit.
Massachusetts State Police have now launched an investigation into the suicide.
