Some Nigerians have called on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to terminate the contracts of popular Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, following a house party she held for her husband’s birthday.
The party held with many in attendance, is flagrant disregard for the much-touted social distancing.
It would be recalled that the popular actress earlier made a jingle for the agency in order to sensitize members of the public on the need to stay safe and maintain social distancing when in the public domain.
Despite the fact that she is an ambassador of the agency, she threw a party yesterday at Amen Estate, Lagos State, in celebration of her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello.
The video she later posted on Instagram shows that the house party was attended by a number of Amen Estate residents.
This is uncalled for.
What are Nigerians’ Reactions?
Knowing full well that Nigerians do not take things lightly, a number of her fans and critics came hard on her, stressing that the NCDC must act fast in terminating her contract.
A twitter user @MaziOlisaemeka said, “What Funke Akindele and the husband did was highly irresponsible. I expected both of them to know better. How can you organize a house party with so many people in attendance at this time when social distancing is very important. It’s disappointing really.” (Sic)
Another twitter handler, @DrOlufunmilayo wrote, “Dear @NCDCgov, Please I hope there’s a clause in the contract that Funke Akindele signed that spells punishment for the kind of idiocy she displayed yesterday hosting a house party despite being an NCDC ambassador. This is a total slap on the NDCD. Pls RT till NCDC acts on this.” (Sic)
Another twitter #@Deshymalls came hard on her, saying “Some people are angrier at the fact that I called Funke Akindele and her husband idiots than they are about what they did. If you excuse such behavior, you are an IDIOT too” (Sic)
Concluding Remark
Given the foregoing action of Funke Akindele and Nigerians’ reactions, there is no doubting the fact that she really made mincemeat of her prestige and worth. Her action is not the only tomfoolery, but it belittles human reasoning due to the fact that she is even an ambassador of NCDC. As steps in the right direction, the NCDC should terminate the contract outright in order to serve as a lesson and deterrence to others.
More importantly, the task force or police should enforce the order to the letter. Social icons like Funke Akindele should be arrested and made to face the full weight of the law as her action portends danger to the community as a whole. That is the best way to enforce compliance in any given human society.
