A prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Aisha Yesufu, has declared that she would strongly resist any attempt by Peter Obi to pursue a second term in office if he becomes Nigeria’s president in 2027.
Speaking during an interview, Yesufu emphasised that Obi had previously committed to serving only a single term and must be held accountable to that promise.
She explained that Obi’s stance on a one-term presidency is not a recent political strategy but a long-standing position he maintained even before the 2023 elections.
According to her, she personally sought reassurance from him to confirm his commitment before publicly advocating on his behalf.
Yesufu recounted that she directly asked Obi to reaffirm his pledge, noting that her support was tied to his integrity and consistency.
She stressed that she does not take her reputation lightly and needed to be certain of his position before defending it publicly.
Making her position clear, Yesufu stated that any reversal of that promise would be met with firm opposition.
She added, however, that she believes Obi is someone who values his word and is likely to honor it.
She said, “If Peter Obi gets into office as president and decides to do more than one term, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his words, and he has to stick to his words.
“I sat down with Mr Peter Obi and I said to him, I need your word on this. I know you had said it before. I want you to repeat it. Is it true you’re going to do just one term? He said, Aisha, I told you, even in 2023 and I still mean it.
“I sought that clarification because I was going out telling people and putting my name on the line. I don’t joke with my name. I don’t joke with my integrity. And he said he gave his word.

“So, he can’t come back and say that he’s going to do more than one term. We will fight him there. But I know also that he’s someone who keeps his words.”
