Mr Habib Aliyu, father of Zainab Aliyu, the young lady who was to be executed by the Saudi authorities for allegedly been in possession of hard drug has been identified as a journalist and not a Prominent Politician like most Nigerians think.
Habib is an Assistant Director of News, with Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and also a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and presently in Lagos as a delegate from Jigawa State at the on going convention of the Guild.
On hearing of his daughters arrest, he requested for full investigation to ascertain the innocence of Zainab Aliyu, following the discovery at the airport of a bag containing illicit drugs purportedly bearing a tag with her names.
The outcome of the investigation and subsequent trial of the suspects confirmed the innocence of the two Nigerians who were released after a well-planned and coordinated process.
Investigations conducted by the Airport Authorities and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano discovered a drug cartel at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano, that specialises in planting illicit drugs on innocent travellers without their knowledge.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) is holding its Biennial Convention in Ikeja, the Lagos Airport Hotel.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed is the Host Minister of the convention expected to be attended by over 300 editors in Nigeria.
The theme of the convention is ‘Media Convergence as Strategy for Survival.
A major high-point of the convention is the election of new Exco members to run the affairs of the guild in the next two years after the expiration of the tenure of Mrs. Funke Egbemode-led Exco.
Meanwhile, the Election Committee for the Guild has announced that it had cleared 23 candidates to vie for elective positions into the Guild’s Executive Council and Standing Committee.
The election will hold on Saturday, May 4 after the opening ceremony and it is the first election to be held using the amended 2016 NGE Constitution and Election Guidelines.
A statement signed by the Secretary of NGE Electoral Committee, Gbemiga Ogunleye, in Lagos, said 23 candidates were cleared for 12 offices.
