NHIS Suspends Executive Secretary Indefinitely

The Board of the National Health Insurance Scheme has suspended the Executive Secretary of the board, Prof Yusuf Usman, indefinitely.

The chairman of the council, Dr. Ifenne Enyantu stated this at a media briefing in Abuja.

She also said that the Council has set up an administrive committee to investigate the infractions and allegations against the Executive Secretary.

She noted that the decission to suspend the ES was approved, Prof. Isaac Adewole.

“This adminsistrative pannel has three months to carry out its assignment and report back to council. I want you to know that we consulted and got the approval of the minister of health” She said.

An Ag. Executive Secretary, Mr. Sadiq Adamu Abubakar has also been appointed.

It should be recalled that Prof. Yusuf was suspended by the minister of health in July 2017 but he was recalled shortly after by President Muhammadu Buhari in February 2018.

Some of the allegations against the suspended Executive Secretary includes unauthorised Expenditure above Limits and other corruption allegations.

Mr Yusuf returned from a seven-month suspension in February after President Muhammadu Buhari turned aside the recommendations of a ministerial probe panel that indicted him of misconduct.

He stoked the current crisis that has further heated the tension at the agency by asking the Governing Council to punish the man who held the fort while he was on suspension, Attahiru Ibrahim, and three other directors.

Mr Yusuf alleged that the top management officials paid upfront a lawyer they engaged to defend the agency in a case instituted by Mr Yusuf’s predecessor, Martins Thomas, over his removal as Executive Secretary in April 2015.
